Shipcraft Series

Rodney and Nelson by By Les Brown Rodney and Nelson by By Les Brown
Ref: K2196
Rodney and Nelson by By Les Brown:

The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, highlighting differences between sisterships and changes in their appearance over their careers. This includes paint schemes and camouflage, featuring colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings and scale plans. The modelling section reviews the strengths and weaknesses of available kits, lists commercial accessory sets for super-detailing of the ships, and provides hints on modifying and improving the basic kit. This is followed by an extensive photographic survey of selected high-quality models in a variety of scales, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.

The two ships covered in this volume were the only capital ships designed and built between the wars - a special concession of the Washington Treaty's ban on new battleships - and they were unlike anything before them, with the superstructure three-quarters aft and all main armament turrets forward of the bridge. During the war Nelson survived mine and torpedo damage, while Rodney played a major part in the destruction of the Bismarck, both surviving to be broken up post-war.

British Destroyers A-1 & Tribal Classes by Les Brown:

The 'ShipCraft' series provides in-depth information about building and modifying model kits of famous warship types. Lavishly illustrated, each book takes the modeller through a brief history of the subject class, then moves to an extensive photographic survey of either a high-quality model or a surviving example of the ship. Hints on building the model, and on modifying and improving the basic kit, are followed by a section on paint schemes and camouflage, featuring numerous colour profiles and highly-detailed line drawings. The strengths and weaknesses of available kits of the ships are reviewed, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.

This new volume deals with the classes which represent the whole inter-war development of British destroyers, from the prototypes Amazon and Ambuscade of 1926 - the first new post World War I design - to the powerful and radically different 'Tribal' class a decade later. These ships formed the backbone of Royal Navy destroyer flotillas in the Second World War.

This volume covers the five ships of the highly successful Queen Elizabeth class, a design of fast battleship that set the benchmark for the last generation of dreadnoughts. Although they fought with distinction in WW1, all were thought valuable enough to be modernised between the wars - indeed, three were massively reconstructed, providing the modelmaker with a challenging variety of possible subjects.

The strengths and weaknesses of available kits of the ships are reviewed, and the book concludes with a section on research references - books, monographs, large-scale plans and relevant websites.

This volume features the King George V class battleships, the most modern Royal Navy battleships of WW2 and a very popular modelling subject. The King George V herself helped sink the Bismarck, and the Prince of Wales was famously sunk by Japanese aircraft in the Far East. Ships of this class served throughout the war in many theatres, and their changes of armament and colour scheme during this time offer many opportunities to the ship modeller to modify basic kits to show ships at different periods in their lives.

This volume covers the heavily armed coastal craft known to the British as E-Boats. Fast, seaworthy and outgunning Allied MTBs and PT-boats, they were probably the most effective inshore attack craft of the war. Large scale (1/72) kits exist of both early and later versions, and they are popular modelling subjects throughout the world.

The latest in this series covers the three ships of this First World War type, Hood, Repulse and Renown, which survived to fight in the Second. Still the fastest capital ships in the world in 1939, their protection was not up to contemporary standards and two were famously lost in action. Hood in an old-fashioned gunnery duel, but Repulse succumbed to the more modern threat of aerial attack. The one modernised ship, Renown, survived an adventurous wartime career.

The two German ships which form the subject of this volume were among the first products of rearmament under Hitler. For political reasons they were neither as large nor as well armed as foreign equivalents, but they were very fast, which led them to be described as ‘battlecruisers’ in some quarters. They enjoyed an adventurous war, both surviving heavy damage, before Scharnhorst was sunk in an epic gun battle off the North Cape, while Gneisenau succumbed to heavy air attack.

A pre-war design, the Type VII was developed as the campaign progressed and was still in frontline service in 1945. All the major variants, as well as minor changes to equipement, are covered here. With its unparalleled level of visual information , paint schemes, models, line drawings and photographs, it is simply the best reference for any modelmaker setting out to build one of these famous boats

This volume is devoted to the largest, fastest and most powerful heavy cruisers of their era. Japanese striving for superiority in individual ships produced designs whose unusual lines, massive superstructure and heavy armament have made them a challenge to modelmakers ever since. Combined with a fighting record stretching from the first to the very last days of the war, this makes them one of the most popular of all subjects for warship modelling.

This book will show ship modellers how to turn their kits into something really special, but its unparalleled level of visual information will also appeal to the general warship enthusiast.

Allied Torpedo Boats by J Lambert & Les Brown

The ShipCraft series provides modetlers with all they need to know about a famous class or type of warship and associated model kits. This ‘Special’ has twice the extent of the standard volumes in order to give better coverage to the many torpedo boat designs used by the coastal forces of the Royal and US Navies.

The book concentrates on the types used in the greatest numbers Vosper ‘short’ MTBs in the RN and Elco PT Boats in the USN and their principal variants but there is coverage of designs by other builders, like Thornycroft and White in the UK and Higgins in the USA, and a few of the more interesting experimental craft are also illustrated. However, it is confined to torpedo boats, and the weapons and equipment they carried, the related motor gunboats being excluded for reason of space.

Nevertheless, with its large number of detailed plans and photographs of boats, fittings, weapons and equipment, this book offers an unparalleled level of visual information on its chosen subject, including paint schemes and museum-standard models reproduced in full colour. For any modelmaker setting out to build one of these famous ‘little ships’, it is simply the best reference available.

Although designed within treaty limitations, they proved powerful and well-balanced ships, and their unparalleled fighting record makes them popular modelling subjects.
